L'Assommoir

Published in 1877, the seventh novel in the Les Rougon-Macquart series by Emile Zola, L'Assommoir is about the suffering of the Parisian working-class. It revolves around the character of Gervaise Macquart, a laundress who yearns to have a happy family.
