Sikes, William

American author, journalist and an art critic. Sikes is famous for writing under more than 20 pen names. Self-educated, he started his career as a typesetter and a writer for various periodicals. His first book, A Book for the Winter-Evening Fireside, was published in 1858. At the age of twenty-four, he was made State Canal Inspector of Illinois. Sikes continued to write for various journals throughout his life. In 1876, he was appointed U. S. consul at Cardiff, Wales and held this post till his death. During this time, he wrote on Welsh archaeology, history and culture. Sikes' works include One Poor Girl: The Story of Thousands (1869), British Goblins: Welsh Fairy Mythology (1880), Rambles and Studies in Old South Wales (1881), and Studies of Assassination (1881). ;
