James, William

Biography

American philosopher, physiologist, psychologist and teacher, William James was the brother of the Henry James. He was a gifted writer who produced works on theology, psychology, ethics, and metaphysics. He believed that any view of the world is a compromise between the objectively given and the personally desired. He delivered series of lectures on pragmatism at Lowell Institute and later at Columbia University that was published as Pragmatism (1907) and The Meanings of Truth (1909). The Principles of Psychology (1890) is one of his masterpieces. His other works include: The Will to Believe (197), Human Immortality; Two Supposed Objections to the Doctrine, (1898), Memories and Studies (1911).
