Kipling, Rudyard

Kipling was born in Bombay, India.  He was an extremely popular writer of novels, short stories, and poems.  Later in life, however, the author of 'The White Man's Burden' came to be regarded by some a proponent of imperialism and militarism, and the controversy over how to interpret his writing continues.  In 1907 became the first English author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.  He remains the youngest author ever to be awarded that prize. ;
