Mary Mapes Dodge became an author and editor after the death of her husband. Once her collection of short stories, The Irvington Stories (1864), met with success, a novel was solicited. She then wrote Hans Brinker, an instant bestseller. Later in life, she edited St. Nicholas Magazine, one of the most successful magazines for children of the late - nineteenth century. ;
