Bird, Isabella Lucy

Isabella Lucy Bird (1831 - 1904) was an English writer born in Boroughbridge. She wrote a number of popular books about her travels. Bird was the first female fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. A great humanitarian, she also founded several hospitals in Korea and China. Her most famous writings include English Woman in America (1856), The Hawaiian Archipelago (1875), A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains (1879), andJourneys in Persia and Kurdistan (1891). ;

Isabella Lucy Bird was an eminent English traveller and writer. She is renowned for her well-informed, challenging and delightful travel adventures in remote places. She was the first female Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in Edinburgh.;
