Biography
Greatest dramatist in the history of the Japanese theatre Chikamatsu is generally considered the Shakespeare of Japanese theatre. Chikamastu is said to have written over 100 plays, most of which were written for the Bunraku or puppet theatre. His works combine comedy and tragedy, poetry and prose, and scenes of combat, torture, and suicide on stage. Most of his domestic tragedies are based on actual events. One of his famous plays, Sonezaki Shinju was based on the reports of an actual double suicide. Kikusenya Kassen is his most famous play. ;
